Traces: remnants of times past

"If these tables could talk"...imagine the tales that tables could tell about what they have witnessed through time!

In two cafes in Auckland, tables with traces of their former lives wait to be used again. The public are invited to contribute to this installation by visiting one of the two venues, thereby helping to create an extension to the tables' narrative and becoming part of this ongoing project.

An element of luck will be required; only one table will be tagged at each venue and you'll need to time your visit for when the artist is on site.

Traces is part of the Auckland 2011 Fringe, February 25 - March 13.

Judith will be regularly updating her blog with photos, impressions and participants' responses throughout the Fringe.

Boltanski wrote that "memory was repeatedly threatened by forgetting" and his work largely consisted of "preserving what he calls la >petite memorie<, or >small memory<. This is stored in small, apparently insignificant everyday things, which after a person's death remains behinds as relics".2
